901/914 selector shaft differences

I got curious and took the end housing off my 914 gearbox. The 901 end housing I have came with a "hockey stick" gear selector shaft, like a Beetle's. An early 914 "tail shifter" box's selector shaft looks as though it would pass thru the opening in in the 901 end housing, if it were the right length, and if it were straight
and without the little provision for the 914's shifting mechanism.
As I see it, I think I need a selector shaft specificly for a 901, and will not need the hockey stick at all. Can anyone concur with
my assumption?
