Smile 930 in 1303

Hi,

I take the final decision to put a 930 4-spd in my 1303.
It is very hard to locate one and if we speak for the early 76-77 model years (3.0l 930 not 3.3l) with the short bellhousing is almost un-obtainable !
So I take a good use '84 long bellhousing for start :

Complete dissasembly of the trans is required due to shorten the bellhousing and the mainshaft by almost 30mm this can be avoided in a buggy or open engine bay car. After the shortening is about 2cm longer from a 915 but is wider a bit so frame horns need to mild haved to let it sit.If you fit an engine with not much HP you need to buy at least 3rd and 4nd aftermarket gears as they are waaaaay tall.Stock R&P is 9:38 but a 8:41 is available in aftermarket.
It can handle easily 550 HP in stock form !!!
This trans can only be compared with a Mendeola for strenght (935 handle 1000HP).Mechanical cluth also.

My question is did you know any to have done this conversion?

Hi,

donīt know anyone who did this conversion. But my question is, what kind of engine will you be driving? Is it necessary to work with this monster-gearbox of Porsche?
Even with the Turbo-engines of Subaru we work with the 915, and weīve never had a breakdown yet. The 915 is still easy to get and besides easier to install than the 930. And whatīs even more important is, that you have a 5th gear.

Talking

Hello,

donīt know anyone who did this conversion. But my question is, what kind of engine will you be driving? Is it necessary to work with this monster-gearbox of Porsche?

I will be a "monster" single turbo nitrous injected rotary dynoed at 611HP...
As I will mainly use the car for drag strips R&P size gets my attention.
915 8:31 R&P lasts for about 6 passes then is scrap...
G-50 is very good too but I don't need a 5th for the passes!

I post pics the project begins !

Rgds,
Jim

You have Dutch relatives Jim?

Personally I don't know any more detailled info than that there is on that website. Just browse through all pages. There are some very detailled pictures.
Or you could send an email to Robert Jongen who's car it is.

Greetings,
Walter

I am going to bring this thread back...I actually have located two 930 trannies...both I think I may be able to get for cheap!

The reason I have been looking for them is because I bought an STI engine that was supposedly comming with an 091 tranny adapter and flywheel. Instead it came with a 930 adapter and flywheel.

Instead of trying to sell this and buy a different one, I am going to try and use it. Good idea you think?

I'd say go for it, the amount of fabricating to fit either trans would be about the same IMO so if you've located a 930 box for a good price go for the bulletproof one now instead of regretting it afterwards.

In another thread I mention just returning from a HPDE, earlier this week.
I can attest to the strength of these boxes. My buddy and also my instructor for this session has a 930 4 speed box. I was quite amazed at what he and his turbo motor threw at this box. Quite IMPRESSIVE.

Well I am starting with a JDM STI V3...more than likely and EVO III 16g turbo. Stock header and up-pipe// with custom dump exhaust.

I am hoping to make around 300 HP and around 260ish torque. So I know this tranny will handle it great, and I should be able to launch pretty hard with it.

What can I do about a Shifter?

Im about to do this conversion as well. I've scored a 930 box that is the short version so no bell housing mods required.

My conversion is going to use 1988 944 turbo arms, axels, drive shafts, hubs, cv's and rear brakes. The drive flanges on the box need to be machine to allow the 944 turbo CV's to bolt on, but thats no big deal. Im changing to coil-over strut rear suspension as well as the torsion housing will be cut out to move the tranny forward and down.

As for the shifter, i've seen porsche conversions that use the stock shifter and frankly... not impressed. Im going full custom from the start. I recommend getting a copy of the "Its Fun 3 Porsche" build DVD. That video is the primary inspiration for my re-build.

My engine is a 2443cc twin turbo'd intercooled efi engine, which should make around 500-550 crank hp. I'd like to see 430rwhp on a chassis dyno.

Here is the best resourse i've found for this conversion.
http://www.veewrx.com/VWRX-engine-ge...ne-gearbox.htm

This guy has done most of the work the hard way, and isnt afraid to talk about his costly learning curve either. Something that mose of us have gone through at some stage or another.

These gearboxes handle 550hp in stock form with ease, and up to 750 when used in track situations provide adequite cooling for the transmission oil is added. They are basically the same box used in the 935 race cars.

I've also found reference to them being used in a lot of v8 power kit cars, where they typically have monster torque figures being driven through them.

I'll be installing mine stock first, but will likely end up changing the drive ratios's down the track after I find out how my new engine drives and delivers torque.

Keep this thread alive. I'll be posting up my progress for my conversion once parts start coming in.

Cheers,
Ian

I found the tranny is going to cost more than I thought...he decided he would let it go to me for $2000. He is an actual porsche shop so he knows the tranny is in great shape! I just have to find a way to come up with the money. That is a bit out of my price range....

Did you manage to purchase the tranny after all?

Just curious: do all the 930's feature LSD? If so, that price is not much at all, as a good LSD may cost that alone...
