901 and electric speedo?
Anyone have any experience adapting a speedometer drive cable (or preferrably the drive assembly coming right out of the transaxle) for an all electric speedo?
I'm running a 914 trans and will be using an Autometer electric speedo. I know VDO and Autometer make adapter/sender assemblies to connect up to the original GM(?) and VW cable drive - in place of the speedometer. Is it possible to use one of these with the 901/914 Porsche trans? Can the speedometer cable be eliminated completely and connect directly up to the speedo drive out of the tranny? I'd like to do away with the cable completely and just run all electric off the transaxle, if possible. Now sure about the 901, but the 914 uses an "angle drive" coming out of the trans with a male thread and male drive tang. I'd like to connect directly to this part if I can do a straight bolt-on. Do the 914 and VW Beetle use the same thread size/drive tang size where the speedo cable connects to the speedometer (the gauge)? Jeff |
