Die Luftwaffe
by Alexander Niederfahrenhorst, Photos supplied by Michael Baumeister
Feb 11, 2003 There are those that get attention through shock factor with wings and neon, and then there are the professionals who create a uniquely stunning ride based on beauty and performance. One such ride is Michael Baumeister's third creation ... Baumeister Werk III A.K.A 'Luftwaffe'. When you look at the pictures of his Super you will soon understand why it got that nick name. The '75 Super 1303 has a 59 Rag Top welded into the roof for nice long summer cruises. Color glass has been installed even in the rear pop out windows and the car was painted in Diamond Silver, a VW color. The entire body was stripped and you will not find any sound proofing materials in this car as the intention was to get the beetle as light as possible. The interior is spectacular. Drilled and powder coated aluminum sheets were made to function as floor mats and foot rest for driver and passenger and carbon fibre door panels were used to hide the mechanics of the window regulators. Driver and passenger will have very good support in the Sparco sport seats and to keep both in the seats Schroth-Racing harnesses were installed. The dashboard as well is Porsche inspired. It is a modified glass fibre 911 dash with Porsche gauges. Mike tried to hide as much of the cabling as possible which is a very difficult task in a gutted car. To stiffen up the body a polished front Heigo cross brace was installed and a polished Heigo roll cage found it way into the interior of the car to also protect the driver of this race inspired bug. The motor is a 2.4l type 4, BAS stainless steel exhaust, 48 IDFs with a central airbox on top of the 911 Porsche shroud which are made out of Carbon. A 911 5 speed transmission was grafted into the chassis with a self made transmission mount. The brakes are from Porsche as well. 944 parts are used to get the Super stopped in time. To get the best out of the braking performance Mike used a modified Master Brake Cylinder and braided steel brake lines. For the suspension Mike used yellow Konis at the back coupled with 944 Torsion bars and in the front you will find coilovers. This coupled with 215/45ZR17 on 7.5 x 17 ET52 at the front and 235/40ZR17 on 9.0 x 17 ET47 at the rear with 40mm spacer up front and in the back should be adequate enough to keep the bug glued on to the asphalt at all times. To fit tires that size flared fenders were used which are also made out of Carbon to help with the weight loss of the Super. To further push the weight down, running boards and bumpers made out of Carbon were used with self made aluminum bumper brackets which were drilled to save even more weight.
