G50

Hey guys im looking around for a g50 trans i really want a 6 speed but for the right deal i would get a 5 speed. is there anything i should look for as far as year, bell type ect.. ive seen short and long bells. are they all tail shift or do some have side shift?

ive also read that some require some major work to get to work?
tell me if im wrong but i believe its the newer ones that need mods to work after 88 or so. what mods do they need? any info would be great, id hate to drop alot of cash on something i couldnt use.

Thanks
Mike

G50 was only on 87ish on 911s. Not sure if it came on the C2 at all?

Are you sure you are not thinking of the 901 tranny? Which came in 911s and 914s (tail or side shift).

Also the 915 is a very strong tranny and has a standard pattern (the 901 is dogleged for 1st)... You would have to have a huge motor to hurt the 915.

ill be doing the ever popular ej20t or tt, im shooting for anywhere between 3-400 hp so im sure i want togo g50 i just wasent sure if they all had tail shifters, after alot of reading today im pretty sure they are all tail shifters

ive seen a 6 speed that came from an 86. i believe from 86-88 (g50/01) had magnesium cases and the later ones have aluinimum cases (G50/02) not 100% sure though...

from the looks of things i think i will actually look for a later trans, i dont think the difference in bell lenghts is going to make a huge difference with all the cutting required to fit a g50 in, and really wont matter if i use a 6 speed because im sure its alot longer and im guessing that its only harder to install a later trans because it requires more clearencing. i dont plan on keeping the stock horns anyway, it will all be tubed, so it shouldnt really matter

there isnt alot of info out there on a g50 swaps, the Aussieveedubbers site seems to have the most info ive found and even thats got a limited amount of info, ill keep looking but my eyes are all from looking at the monitor to much lol

im really in no rush, im looking for the right deals on things, i dont even have a car yet, but i am definitely doing a notch, if i could just force people to answer their e-mails lol, you would think that they would be motivated to sell their cars the money is starting to burn in my pocket haha

thanx for the reply and thanks to bug@5speed for the stuff you sent me, very cool and informative

Mike

How much harder is it to fit a G50/00 short bell transmission than a 915? Are they close to the same length or would alot of cutting be needed to fit a G50/00? I know some is needed for the 915 but I just wanted to know how much more may be needed.

I'm considering a 915 for the car in my avitar hooked to a EJ25 Subaru but finding a reliable source for a tranny that isn't over $1,000 is hard. Any leads? Thanks.

Reliable (5-6 speed) PORSCHE transmission are always more than $1,000.00. A core is usually worth $2,500. Take note that some race built 915 can cost $7,500. and G50/50s built can cost $10,000. Figure most used take-out G50's in good shape can be about $2,500-3,500 easily. Also note some cheaper units will not have LSD. Another think to look at in the budget process is that your clutch, if you buy a good one like Sachs or Centerforce, is going to cost another $1,000. Make sure the new clutch can handle the higher horsepower you will be generating. The old cars did not put out much stock, compared to a new turbo Suby.

Thanks,
Randy
