911 dash for a 1302...will this work?

I just recently had a set of 911/914 (5 gauges) restored and was wondering how I'm going to set them into my 1302's dash. I got my hands on a 911's dash from a friend and was thinking of cutting just the area where the gauges mount in. After some trimming and fitting I was going to either weld it in or weld some tabs on and fit it to my 1302. No matter what I would have to cut the original 1302's dash to allow them to fit. Has anyone tried this.....is there someone out there who makes a fiberglass 911 dash for a 1302 (I've seen them for a 1303....so maybe they exist).

i don't recall ever having seen a flat dash 911 conversion. i do think i saw a 914 dash eyebrow molded into a flat dash that looked pretty good. don't recall where though and i could be remembering all of this wrong. (i know, a lot of help, huh?)

I have seena 911 style dash on a flat screen, I think it was a proper 911 dash welded to the car. It was a carson topped beetle, black with peppermint sidepanels and polished fuchs. It has been on the UK show seen for years and has had a volksworld feature so you should be able to find photos of it...

I think I've seen that car.....and based on your description....that car was featured in either VW trends or HotVW's a few years ago. Looks like I've got some hunting to do

It can be done, and has been done. In Keith Seume's excellent book, VW Beetle - The New Custom Handbook, there is a picture on page 78 of the German Look chapter showing exactly that. I have tried to scan and crop it for you below.

To make the above pic fit, I cropped out the accompanying caption. It reads:

Porsche 911 gauges work particularly well in a German Looker. This car has had a solid insert welded in place to accommodate the new instruments.

I think what Eviloval means is more something like the one pictured in the Tech Articles of this website: Die luftwaffe. They say it's a modified glass fiber porsche dash.

Perhaps. No mention was made about any tech article, though. I was just answering the original post which was a plea for a more general answer.

kleinporsche is right on the mark.....I'm looking for something similar to a 911's dash. I know they make a setup that works with a 1303.....I just haven't seen when made for a 1302. I don't want the gauges to sit flat in the original 1302's sheet metal. Instead I want them to wrap slightly around the steering wheel. My original intention was to remove a section of 911 dash and mold/trim it to fit onto my 1302's dash without interfering with the steering wheel or the windshield.

I do not know if it will help but for 99$, glass action makes a dash that is not exactly like a 911, but it wraps around the steering wheel.
here's the link:

Maybe it's not worth the time and money to cut up your 911 dash...

kleinporsche I had one of those in my old ghia years ago.....it was ok....but I really want the 911's dash (at least just the gauge cluster) intergrated into my car. I'm trying to hunt down the car ricola mentioned.....I've seen it before and also read the article it was in....just can't find the damn issue

I remember seeing something of this nature at the hoffmann-speedster website, in the fiberglass section. There is no picture, but it says 911 style dash for 1302. I remember sending an e-mail request to see if i could get a picture, but never got a reply. That was like a year ago. Also, im not sure the url for hofmann-speedster...google it.

nevermind, i googled it for you...

http://www.hoffmann-speedster.de/us/products.htm

just click here, go to gfk section, and scroll down towards the bottom, there is now a pic of the 1302 version..(wonder if that was cuz of me??)

hope this helps!!

there is a picture now on hoffman speedsters site.

Ive e-mailed the guys over there and asked about getting it shipped to the US and they said its a no dice.

SO we need somebody in the US to make a 911 style dash for the 1303. I remember Carbon joe was till he shut down. when i get back to Ca there is a VW buggie body manufactuing place in my home town (Fiber jet), and i will see if i could work with them to get a 911 style dash produced.

im making my own metal dash for my 1303... the following pics might help you a lot... Both show the same from the same angle but with different colour, so some details can be seen. might help you make a template to graft in your 1302 dash
