This is an update from wednesday from an week ago.
I had then finally some time to get something done. At first started with putting on the (i don't know how they're called in English) fast-clips?? on the engine lid. And I can say now; hinges are SOOOOO much easier on an round decklid  It took me almost an hole day to get them straight and nice on the lid.
After I got started with making brackets for the removable rear valance.

This is how it looks now;

And another pic of the welding I more than 2 weeks ago.

Racelook,

Hey, another sucker in the building construction industry! Welcome to the club!:D

I graduated from Architectural Technology at NAIT (Trade College) a long, long time ago.

But by the look of your work, you may have picked the wrong career choice...

Keep up the excellent work!:agree:

Cheers,

Doug

NOW:D

Last week thuesday I had maked some plates for the dash and for welding close an ventilationgab in the heater channels. I then also unscrewed the steering pilar. And get on search for good hammer and dollies. Because mine are now verry cheap ones, which are $hitty.

Last friday I cut away the border of the engine lid and welded that close.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...umbs/47172.jpg
Also last saturday I had worked on the car (before I got partying) for 1,5 hour. I begin with installing the 2 lowest hoodpins; i say it again; WHAT AN PAIN in the *** are that hoodpins on an round decklid  .
I "finished" that tonight=> see pic
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...umbs/47171.jpg

I also finally have decided which rear lights I want to use.

Grt Wiebrand

p.s. I'm in Canada this summer for 6 weeks.
p.s. keep an little bit ontopic

Racelook March 14th 2007 07:34

Yesterday evening the lowest hoodpins completely welded and grinded smooth.

This how it looks now;
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/47228.jpg

And this is an problem I have with the decklid and the carrosserie. Somebody also hed it sometimes? And how did you solve it?;

http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/47230.jpg

The rearlights are orded and mine Hub for the steeringwheel is in.

ajsyrup March 15th 2007 08:15

you talking about the gap?

are the hoodpins pushing down pressure on the decklid?

just a thought i am sure u checked that already though :agree:

Rob March 15th 2007 08:25

Hey Wiebrand,

Where in Canada will you be ?

If you are in the Toronto / Hamilton area you should drop by for a beer !

En dan kun je me ook ff helpen met mijn kever ;) :D

To keep it on topic: is it possible the decklid warped because of the welding ?

Rob.

I'm talking about the differents in round form on the left and right end of the decklid. It has not the same form as the body. If I set the pins higher, the form is alsmost okay, but then there will be an gab on the underside, between body en decklid (where the rubber will be).

Rob.

Will be around Ohio (and also Toronto) and the most time around Winnipeg

Kafer_Mike March 15th 2007 11:37

Part of the issue may be warping of the deckild as a result of all the welding. Are you going to install the rubber seal? If not, I'd split the difference on the center vs. edge gap using rubber spacers (doughnuts) on the pins to set the height...

Racelook March 20th 2007 19:04

So far I could see today it's definatelly the rear panel that is more "round" then the original one. Will be banging it straight soon:mad:

Today received the ordered hammer and dollies. I used it today a couple of times, and I must say quality is just so much better then the cheap ****.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...umbs/47540.jpg

Yesterday evening and 3/4 of today wordt on my car with an temperature against freezing. At first finished the scoop on the enginelid.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...umbs/47538.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fo...umbs/47539.jpg

And also started with an upset of the dashboard.

Wiebrand

Kafer_Mike March 20th 2007 22:46

Much better... :agree: :agree:

zen March 23rd 2007 10:49

looks like you are making some good progress, even if frustrating. i too am getting ready to tackle hood pins for the c/f decklid i have. my plan is to just fab some brackets that will mount to the stock hinge and latch locations and tie the hood pins in there. so i can flip back to stock at any point needed (with the stock decklid with no holes of course).

i'm not sure how much easier that is really going to be, but will let you know.

keep up the good work. if you make it down to Atlanta, let me know so we can hook up.

Racelook March 26th 2007 05:20

Thanks Guys

Had been working on the bug yesterday afternoon. I was planning to make an hole new dash by myself. That plan I still have, but is set back for an couple years now because the budget (which budget:eek: ?) don't let it.
So I started making an temporary dash.

Besides the switches there also will be signallights.

Hi

Make sure that you can see the speedo behind the steering wheel, this is a problem on 1303s with a smaller steering wheel.

Steve

Racelook March 31st 2007 13:38

Thanks, I know that. I had an 350mm steeringwheel in my mind. But this was without any seats, so I don't know exactly where I come out in the future. But hell yeah this is only temperary.

Wiebrand

It will quite for the next 2 weeks, I'm going to china.

GL-Aussielooker May 23rd 2007 22:07

Hey RACELOOK --- any new progress. I need my daily update fix..:)

Racelook June 29th 2007 17:37

I'm verry verry bussy this time. Have almost no time free. But have been working an couple of evenings in the last 2,5 months at my bug. Making my front bonnet rustfree. For most of the people this bonnet was good enough, but I had the front and back lip removed and almost welded in by now.

Will post when there's something to show.

Any progress? Its been quite awhile.

Racelook January 30th 2008 09:32

The project goes verry slowly. Still damn busy. I have worked on it last sunday (the first time in the last 3 months:shocked: ). Been welding on the front of the beetle (for the second time). I was not pleased with the welding I did several years ago.

When something is to show I will post.

Wiebrand

some news from racelook !!

eh eh !! :D

Racelook April 6th 2008 17:09

Last saturday i was free from work (because of an good party on friday), so I could work on the bug.

At first maked the hoodpins for the front lid on the car.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/66497.jpg

I had an feeling upfront that the lowest hoodpin wouldn't work, and yes I was right. Because of the curf in the hood this can't work with an hoodpin, so I will solve this on an other way.

I also have mounted several things on the bug (front and rear lid, all the fenders, rear panel and the "step-up bords"). Everything fits good except the step-up-bords this will need some work with poly to get it fit right.

Greetings Wiebrand

jonas_linder April 27th 2008 11:13

Keep it coming Wiebrand, I always enjoy reading about your car! :)

72marinablue June 19th 2008 20:55

I Want More!!

Racelook August 24th 2008 17:16

SO finally an verry little updae.

There is not something really special to anouch, so than I don't post anything.

But last week I had worked 3 days on the car, so I have some little to show. I'm checking all the welded metal so I have them ready for sanding.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/71976.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/71977.jpg
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/71978.jpg

And yep everything that is different from color than orage is welded or repaired.

So is how our workplace looks like now.
http://www.keversite.nl/fotoalbum/fotos/71980.jpg

Owyeah also bought an blastingkit and and toolcar so we can start "fresh" this time.

BulletBug August 25th 2008 08:40

do u do the welding work first then blast? or the other way around??

Racelook August 25th 2008 11:40

I've done both. But I prefer first blasting and then welding. Than you have some nice cleaned metal and you know for sure that you replaced all the rotten stuff on that place.

Most of the time I first blast all the bad spots alone (that I can see) repair them or spray some epoxy over it and repair it later.

I blasted the hole body a year ago or so. And now only want to blast the spots I didn't reached good enough or the repairs I maked so I can be sure there's a good starting point for the epoxy.

Wiebrand
