Looks BAD A$$ :agree: Well done
I hope you are using a fairly wide front tire to complement those brakes. Sandeep |
Looks damn good!!
What size do you have on the discs? What kind of spindles are you running? |
Looks nice... :D

3 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I`m using disc brake spindles of a 72 ball joint axle, took 2 CSP discs (SEBRO) with Porsche 5 stud pattern and machined them down to the inside diameter of the GT3 discs and use them as hubs. Then machined the back of the discs(hubs) to fit Porsche press in wheel studs. It is pretty much a bolt on kit, the discs (GT3) have plenty of clearance. After that was just measuring up for the caliper brackets and getting them made. On the rear is the same stuff as most of you are already using, 944 hubs and backing plates, modified handbrake adjusters (thanks for the tip Sandeep) and new BMW brake shoes. My goal was to fit this brake with 17 in wheels even though they fit 19`s to the Porsches. It is very tight and there are only 2 mm clearance between the caliper and the rim, had to take the balance weights away there. The wheels were another problem as I already had a set of Boxter style 996 wheels (twisties) which did not spin as the caliper was sticking out of the hole. Would have needed a 30 mm spacer to clear it. The ones on it clear it nicely with a 10 mm spacer and don`t look to bad, so they stay. Discs are 330 mm on the rear and 350 up front, gonna try 944 master cylinder and brake proportioning valve for the rear. There will be a lot of testing. The tyres are 205/40 in the front to keep the original look, so testing different components to ensure driveability is necessary. |
No worries, if you want to add the pics to the gallery go ahead Zen.
Cheers |
WARNING the following your about to read is a bad joke, disregard:
Is that a banana in your pocket, or are you caliper to see me? |

Oh that is bad... |
Bummer, should have fitted red ones :D

Just wanted to inject a sad possibility here. Keep in mind if you were to hit an object at high speed, say a rock or a piece of lumber, or even a pothole, and the rim bent, it has to bend less than 2mm or your looking at harps or heat. Not to be the bearer of bad news, but I've seen those wheels bent more than 2mm, I'd just hate to have anyone injured or killed in the name of looking cool. Might I suggest stepping up to the next size wheel? That should introduce enough safety for this problem at least. It does make me drool though.

Don`t think that I`ll ever drive my toy on a road with potholes ;)
Brakes have been checked by a LVV Certifier and approved after machining the 2nd caliper brackets with 3 mounting holes . The Certifier builds race cars himself (super sevens) and reckons that it is plenty of room. These wheels carry the weight of a 996 convertible which is considerably heavier than a 54 Beetle. I saw the brakes of a Peugeot 205 World rally car from 1984 and found that these had only 1 mm clearance between wheel and caliper. I checked them during the rally Targa New Zealand and no problems on this French thingy. If I hit a pothole or rock so hard that it bends the rim, I should be worried about other things too ! But thanks for your concern :) |

[QUOTE=Typ Vier]Hi,
It is very tight and there are only 2 mm clearance between the caliper and the rim, had to take the balance weights away there.[QUOTE] I got half way through this sentence and my brain was already fixed on the sticky weight clearance. Although these wheels should be static balanced, did you have them 2 plane balanced? What was the end result of the balance issue? BTW, great work you've done there! |
The wheels have not been balanced since the clearance problem occured, have to talk to the guys at Frank Allen tyres here on what to do. They`ve got the latest equipment for tyre fitting and balancing and hope fully come up with a solution. The wheel design does`nt really give you many options with the spokes sitting so far outside. Could move the weights more to the outside from the original location but then I would need 10 mm wide balance weights to have 5 mm clearance from the outer edge to the caliper. Most weights are around 20 mm wide.

Impressive looking project. Must've taken a lot of planning. Looks fantastic. (I guess you won't be making the 12-hour flight with it to drive the streets of Baltimore city, though.)
|
A trip to Baltimore......tempting
Just jump in a plane in about 1 year and we go for a drive along the Tasman sea  |
Once again, your brakes are awesome!
But do you have a picture of the backside of the disc and the hub mounted on the spindle? Care to join your meashurements on the caliper-bracket? :) |
Ha Ha, I laughed
