1302's were two year cars, at least in the US. and there was a GT. i don't remember all of the specifics but i know they came with 15x4.5 and 15x5.5 stamped steel rims.

Yes the first special model Volkswagen was in '72. Yes the 1302's front fenders and hoods will one day be diffecult to find like the '67's and their one off stuff.

The letter S stands for disk brakes as Yetibone mentioned, but also for the bigger; 1600cm2 engine.
