Rear Torsion Elimination.
I need to relocate my transaxle (901) forward about 2 inches, planning on running coilovers in the back, what is the best way to eliminate the rear torsion bars, just pull them out? or is there something else that needs to be done?

I think you still have to tie the front of the spring plate to something if you ditch the torsion bar... seems like I saw somewhere a kit that put a bearing in a retaining plate kinda thingy... ahhgg, I can't remember where I saw it. Maybe it will come to me later.

This might be what you are looking for. I think SupeRSI has a set.

seen the uniball setup before, nice but pricey, I think its more for adjustability.
A bearing hey? maybe I can hack the splined enf off my torsion bars and run a bearing inside the tube to allow rotation as well as keeping it centered. Might work. I'll first see if I can just pull the suckers out, unless anyone knows for sure

I just pulled out the torsion bars on mine and used 944 aftermarket bushings (and cut down 944 cover). That provided decent location...

Thanks for adding that in Rich, I wasn't sure if just the bushing alone was rigid enough to hold the plate in correctly since it has a lot of twist on it.
Shadowbug, I made my own uni-ball setup. You could to if you wanted to get that deep into it... but this deal Rich is talking about sounds waaaay simple-er.

Hi
I saw a website and I didnt bookmark it was in the US and made of pressed steel and bolted to the torsion bar tube and had a bearing fitted, the same people also made tube trailing arms. I think it was eagle something??? Steve C

Hi
I wonder if they have thought of making narrowed rear IRS arms, it would save a lot of work. Steve C

They do. I've got a set on my bus. Narrowed 1.5" and tubular chromoly.

The Eagle coil-over conversion is a great deal for the price. I have messed with them for a couple years. I am reverting my Signature Manx back to its bug roots (for my daughter with sudden interest) and using a set of Eagle coil-over plates to replace the MBT Uni-balls now going on my convert. Still using Red9 front conversion so hopefully in a couple weeks I can comment on ride. Eagle is easy to do business with, call them and a few DAYS later UPS brings you the parts. No wire transfers, trans-Atlantic shipping or sucky exchange rates...
Thanks, Randy

Hi
What are you going to do for shock mounts? Wont the coilovers break the shock towers. Steve C

good point, would a guy have to cut off the stock cast pieces and fabricate a tubular structure?

If you were gonna run one of those rear braces that triangulates the towers with the tranny horns, that might be enough for street use.
If you plan ridiculous hp and drag starts... you KNOW what needs to be done ![]()
