Latest update, plenty of work on the engine, starting looking at the front speaker installation (They are REALLY nice speakers!), done another 4 hours of soldering/connecting and rerouting wiring.

Felt like I was going to be sick when we worked out what had happened, so threw in the towel and walked away from the car for the rest of the day (this was yesterday) We think we can fix it, will be an interesting story if we can!
