how dropped are the dropped spindles?

they always say that gas shocks are going to raise your car.

i'd imagine you probably had pretty worn springs in the first place and there's not much weight on there in either, did you get new tires too with deep tread? it could be a combination of things

Amount of weight on the front axle makes a big difference to ride height even with stiff gas shocks on (it's because the front torsion bars are actually very soft)

Just a full tank of fuel can lower the front of a beetle by as much as an inch.
Even on a beetle with stiff gas shockers this is true.
