Thanks for the info. Just trying to do my homework to see what I'm getting into before I go there.
You mates are really hacking and a cutting, must be determined to get those Porsche Boxes squeezed in those horns. Steve you mentioned on your Website that you had to bend your linkage. I saw this used race shifter setup on ebay, maybe if afordable it could help you. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...00073892QQrdZ1 Jon

915 gearbox installed
Hi,
just tried to upload a few pictures of a 915 in a 1303 chassis, but either the files were too big, or the pictures were not worth uploading anymore. Wanted to show you, that a 915 can be placed in the same position as a bug´s gearbox without cutting the torsion tube out. With my conversion parts (nose cone, traverse front, axle flanges) it´s easy to manage. You can have a look on my site www.bugat5speed.de. Do also have a 5-speed shifter for the 915 with very short shift ratios. It´s easy to install into bugs and is very exact to shift. Has very strong spring barrier inside against 5th and R-gear. Can send some pictures by mail to those who give their mail-addresses. Sorry that I can not show the pictures to all of you. Perhaps you can tell me what I´m doing wrong with my pictures (80 KB is not very much) Cheers Martin info@bugat5speed.de |

Hi BugaRu
Thats a nice shifter, I think I will stay with the stock one. I cut my torsion bars for two reasons, 1 Moving weight forward for better distribution. 2 A STI motor with variable cams fitted to a G50 would have put the cam covers out near the rear bumper. Steve

Does anyone know how much power a Porsche 915 Trans can hold. Also any idea of the R&P and 1-5th gearing?
Matrin... I checked out your Website but couldn't read German. By the way very nice and well done website. Here is a link to one of my Websites. Nothing fancy, just shows some of my cars. Actually I need to spend some time on it and update it with newer pics and info. The 1966 Bug now has a new power plant. http://www.bugaru.com/ Steve.... Is the STI engine being pushed backwards because of the added size of the Porsche Trans? I'm using a STI Block but with SOHC's.. It makes the engine smaller. The pic attached "or should be attached?" This engine is rated at approx 325hp, on 8lbs of boost but I'll know better when I get it on the dyno. Jon

mine is the same story as Steve. I cut the centre out of the torsion bar to shift the engine and gearbox forward. For me it was necessary as both the engine and gearbox are longer than the VW engine and gearbox. I want the whole assembly to fit under stock panels, i.e once the engine lid is closed nothing will be visible...

Hi
Your correct, I needed to move the motor & trans forward because of the lenght of the overall package, if you look at the photo of my motor you can see the lump on the left rear cam cover. I have seen SOHC motors in bugs before they fit nicley. I read an article on a Aussie Subaru STI here http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/A_1824/article.html that had a few upgrades, nothing much, better exhaust, piggyback EFI controller etc and it made 195 kW (261.5 hp) at the 4 wheels. I will do these upgrades before I put car on the road and then see if I need anymore power after that. Steve PS If you cant open the file at Autopseed let me know.

Steve.
Thanks for the link about the Tech tips on Subaru's. By the way it opened oK. I know what you mean about the cam covers on the DOHC engines. That's why I decided on using the SOHC heads on the STI block. Pic attached below. Hey, I ment to tell you Nice Website, also great job on your 1972 Superbug. Do you know Jak, and John from Auzzi who also have Subaru powered VW's. They both have great rides. Dang you Auzzi's just luv to wrench don't you? Also any chance that you know what the gear ratios are for a G50 R&P and 1-5 ratios? Jon Subaru 2.5 with SOHC heads.
