Its basically like a Hurst Shifter. As I understand it, they're quite expensive for the original VW option, BUT you could make one using a shifter stick from Hurst.
http://www.hurst-shifters.com/shifter-sticks.asp It would be incredibly easy to make using a stock assembly and modifying it. All the cuts and welds (or bolts) would be covered by an aftermarket shift boot. You could put whatever you want for the shiftknob. |

Its just a kind of obsession with the original

You are focused on what you want. Sounds like a good kind of obsession to me. If I see one in my surf-abouts, I'll let you know.
I do like my CSP though.

Up to the top.
Also: do all agree that the CSP shifter is as nice as I have the impression it is? Want the ball style knob.- But what type of lockout? Does other shift-knobs fit straight on? |

Here is the link for selecting the shifter you want through CSP. You will notice the butterfly is the only choice with a ball knob. I have not tried to remove the ball knob so I don't know about thread size or anything like that.
