The T1 ring gear sits too far in for the starter to catch
I cut the face where the starter sits down about 5mm or so, then I used a semi auto (or 911) starter. This let me use a T1 flywheel, otherwise a 356 flywheel should work.
I also had to adapt the T1 clutch bearing to fit the 901 clutch release lever
