Trustworthy place to buy a g50
Where is a good place to buy a g 50? I only know of ebay and haven't been able to check pelican yet. Thanks. Also does anyone know the gearing, or a link to where I can find out what the gearing is inside of them. Thank you

I at this point am sadly forced to share with you my own experiences. I have now bought two totally worthless mis-represented tranny's and am out most of my money not including all the wasted money on shipping...
I am thousands and thousands of dollars out on Ebay Transmissions...only to now have a few worthless paperweights that are better off as door stops then finely tuned porsche based shifting solutions... I would recommend a pre-inspected known milage transmission from a reputable parts house. Do your homework and spend the money. G50's are not cheap. Don't try and 'save money' with this part of your build... nothing is ****tier then trying to save a few dollars only to end up spending that money twice or more... make sure you know the miles, and vin out of the car your getting it from so you can track the history... Know for sure before you buy... Don't buy a 'rebuilt' unless it comes with papers of pedigree with a contact of the shop that did the work... "Rebuilt" on ebay usually means a fresh coat of spray paint. sorry I can't be more positive but at this point I am just hoping no one else has to do learn what I have the hard way... |

I am with you 100% and that is why I started the thread, I don't know of any place like this. I am new to Porsche and am in debate of whether to build my Ghia RR or MR.

I have a 915 tranny from Carquip. A company based in Colorado. I started with a "good used" tranny like JMD. BUT, the guy opened the case up and washed the inside with some kind of degreaser, and did not oil anything after that. It sat in my basement for a year before I had time to work with it. Yes it was a total waste. Carquip could not save anything but the output flanges, but still helped with cost on core charges ($1500 bucks). If I would have gone with a "real shop" to begin with I would have saved the initial $1000 for original purchase...live and learn.
The sales rep that helped me is Eric. He is a member on these and many other Porsche forums. They know there stuff with Porsche's. Do a search on here for Carquip, and you should get some info. (yes they have G50's)

Is there a way to test a trans out of the car?
I bought a 923 trans from German Auto Dismantlers in Atlanta. The transaction itself was stressful as they double charged my credit card, and i got dinged for taxes/duties when shipped on twice its value. They assure me the trans is good because he knows the car(sideswiped write-off), and previous owner it came out of. We'll see. It's been sitting in my garage for a couple years now. After reading wrenchnride247's story above, i'm going to fill it right up with oil this weekend. Pete

i saw that 923....
once you start looking for things, they show up, eh? On a positive note, i found one 9923) on the Samba... The car it came from was in a fire, And it got dropped and bent the shift shaft when they removed it. And it sat and sat... -but- my local shop went through it for around $700. they said it was in fine shape, and low miles. 923s should be good choices for the reason that they have a lot less power going through them during their life. Can't account for what some shady PO might do though.... Guess i just got lucky. (insert Dirty Harry sound bite here).. |

can't remember...
probably ebay. I looked for like 3 years after hearing about how Shad did his... hope you can find a throwout for the thing, it wasn't easy for me. Sometimes the easy way ends up being the hard way! use a 923 instead of converting a 915, and then end up unable to get any 923 specific parts. Kind of like buying a used trans on ebay, and eat shat on shipping, to have it end up being junk. |

I haven't looked at it in awhile. I'm sure there was a bearing in it. I think only the arm that the cable connects to is missing.
