Not really, it just becomes a spacer, or you could make a spacer, but why? One day you may need that gear in an emergency situation

you must remove it , otherwise the brass gear on the crankshaft will be destroyed

Hi, from what I have noted, the distributor drive gear, must remain. When I was buildings a friend type one, until I installed the distributor drive gear , I had excessive crankshaft end play. It took the dive gear installed in order for the end play to be set. Let me be clear, both the brass gear and distributor drive gear are needed.
